Game Deconstructions

Role: Product Analyst

Duration: 2 years

Platform: Mobile and Console

Output: Internal game evaluations, deconstruction of top grossing games, reviewing publishing opportunities, mobile gaming genre classification

I was hired at SEGA to join a newly formed team of analysts that would review internally developed games, provide analysis of competitive products, and track industry and design trends. The experience gave me the opportunity to categorize and dive into different mobile genres which helped me recognize what drove success or failure in top grossing mobile games.

The output I was most proud of were the deconstructions of top grossing games like Game of War, Jurassic Park, etc. They included full detailed breakdowns of the game loop, how monetization tied into the game features, and even touched on grossing and engagement trends tracked via App Annie. It gave game teams a clear picture on what competitors were doing so they could implement features that moved their metrics. Leadership used my reports to aid with high level strategic decisions for the company. For myself, it taught me how to break down and organize the components of any game while recognizing how systems interacted with one another to create a monetizable experience.

As my expertise grew in the mobile games space, I acted as an in-house consultant for many teams both early and late in their development cycle, providing valuable feedback based off of top grossing games and emerging trendsetters. After the first year, my boss left and I moved into publishing, working with the Chief of Product to evaluate partnerships or deals with small studios worth pursuing. It was a valuable experience that taught me how to interview developers and evaluate the potential of their products to see if it fit within our business strengths and needs.

Highlights:

  • Produced 3 highly detailed deconstructions of top grossing mobile games

  • Monthly report looking at performance and unique ideas of soft launched games from other companies

  • Reports and feedback on internal projects and external opportunities

  • Using our team’s genre classification framework to help our developers understand where their games were coming up short in feature implementation and execution
